Woven into the mountains of Appalachia, along the scenic New River in Southern West Virginia, is the appealing city of Hinton. This community is known today to be rich in history and natural beauty. The downtown Historic District, officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places on February 17, 1984, is an architectural gem waiting to be discovered. Included in the Hinton Historic District are 200 buildings - churches, store fronts, and private residences displaying the varying architecture of American Gothic, Classical, High Victorian, American Four Square and Greek Revival styles. There are several museums in Hinton, including the Veterans Memorial Museum, Wood’s Clock Museum, the Hinton Railroad Museum, and King's Civil War Museum.
Hinton is 20 minutes from two of the largest cities in West Virginia; Beckley and Lewisburg. Residents say there is plenty to do either with the outdoors in Hinton and Lewisburg or malls, movies and such in Beckley. Residents are also saying that, for the most part, people in Hinton are good honest people that they and their ancestors have lived for generation after generation. With Hinton’s population of 2,880 in 2002, it is the county seat of Summers County. Summers County is located in the Southern part of West Virginia.
Visitors will find the beautiful Bluestone Lake, one of West Virginia's largest, complete with wonderful outdoor recreation, fishing and hunting, lodging and camping facilities found at Bluestone Wildlife Management Area and Bluestone State Park. Also nearby is Pipestem Resort State Park with its championship golf courses, aerial tram to the Bluestone Gorge, and elegant restaurants and horseback riding.
The New River Gorge National River begins in scenic Summers County, where whitewater enthusiasts may enjoy a wild water ride or just a nice scenic float trip, fun for all ages.
